Being a pistol carrying aircrewman in the quard,my main experience with auto's untill I picked up my XD was with the M-9 (Barretta 92f) and I hated them. Dad and grandpa were both always revolver guys and my Ruger Vaquero in 45 LC was always a fine gun. I shot an H&K USD, a Glock, and a Sig, all in .45acp and baught an XD Service model after I found it pointed the most naturally and never failed to feed or fire. 2k+ rounds later I've only two complaints, the magazine release is a little stiff with a full mag, and the take-up in the trigger took a little getting used to. Easy to clean, reliable, accurate with practice and eats up any kind of ammo you put in it without any problems. Its my primary carry gun, except when I'm in grizzly country, where my old SA long colt with hot loads make me just a bit more comfortable, and when I'm in the mountains open carry is not a concern.
